Twenty-eight years of selling online, told briefly
Ashvin first went online in June 1998, in the Lycos and AltaVista era, looking for a business he could run from India. In 2001 he listed a small range of handicrafts on Baazee, India's first marketplace, and in two years sold exactly one piece. It was enough: in 2001 almost nobody in India believed anything could be sold online, and one sale proved the mechanism worked.
Baazee became eBay India. In 2004 he moved to Surat, the world's diamond-cutting centre, took a GIA course in diamond grading, and began listing diamonds on eBay. From 2006 to 2009 he sold diamonds to buyers in the United States, through a PayPal account opened in 2006 that is still active today without a single dispute.
When the 2008 recession stopped American buyers spending on luxury, he switched to Surat's other export, sarees, and sold them until 2018 across more than twenty marketplaces, winning seller awards from several. From 2012 he also bought and sold domain names, selling .com names to companies including Airtel, Ather and Asian Paints. By 2015 he had moved fully into search and getting businesses found; since 2019 that has meant Google Business Profiles and local SEO for US businesses.
