The map pack

How do HVAC companies get found on Google?

Through the map pack: the three businesses Google shows on a map for searches like "ac repair near me" or "hvac" plus a town. An HVAC company gets into that box by choosing the primary category that matches the season it wants calls from, listing every service (ac repair, ac installation, furnace repair, emergency service, maintenance plans) with its own description, showing hours that match when the phone is actually answered, posting photos of real jobs with the town in the caption, collecting a review after every call-out, and keeping name, address and phone identical everywhere. Pages on the website for each suburb extend that reach beyond the shop's own zip code.

About these screenshots

Positions move, and we say so

HVAC positions swing with the season as well as the week: a competitor who collects reviews through a heat wave can move above you by August. Our clients hold the top three most of the time, and when one drops we see it and work it back. Every screenshot on this site names the search and the date, because a screenshot is a record of a moment, not a promise about next month.

Categories

Which category should an HVAC company use?

This is the decision most HVAC profiles get wrong, and it is not obvious. "HVAC contractor" is the broad category, so nearly every competitor picks it and you compete with heating, cooling and duct companies at once.

The client we manage in Little Falls uses Air conditioning repair service as its primary category and HVAC contractor as a secondary, and it holds the map pack for both kinds of search in its town. If your revenue leans one way, the primary category should lean the same way.

  • Cooling-led business: Air conditioning repair service primary, HVAC contractor and Air conditioning contractor secondary.
  • Heating-led business: Heating contractor or Furnace repair service primary, HVAC contractor secondary.
  • Genuinely both: pick the season you most want to win and check what the current top three use before changing anything.

Google renames and retires categories without notice, so check the picker inside the profile before changing anything.

Hours

The field that decides who gets the 6am call

Cooling failures are discovered at night and at dawn; heating failures on the coldest morning of the year. Google marks a profile "Closed" when its hours say so, and the homeowner with a hot house calls the one that says open.

If you answer the phone around the clock, the profile has to say 24 hours, and emergency service has to be listed as a service with its own description. If you do not, set the real hours accurately and say so rather than overstating; a missed call after an inflated promise costs a review.

Seasons

The work that wins June is done in April

Demand for cooling climbs from May, peaks in July, and drops away by October, when heating searches take over. Google does not rebuild the map pack when the heat arrives; it shows the profiles it already trusts for those searches.

  • February to April: cooling services listed and described, tune-up posts, reviews gathered before anyone is desperate.
  • May to August: emergency availability posted, response times kept up, every call-out asked for a review.
  • September to October: heating services brought forward, furnace photos added, hours checked for the season.
  • November to January: no-heat calls answered fast, holiday hours correct, reviews still arriving.

How we work the map pack, search by search

What the first 90 days look like

  • Weeks 2–5: primary category chosen for the season you want, hours corrected including holidays, every service described.
  • Weeks 4–12: a review request after every call-out, replies within a day, directories corrected.
  • From week 6: a page per suburb and per service, with the coming season's work first.

Questions HVAC contractors ask

More on how the work runs and what it costs is on the FAQ page.

What is the best Google Business Profile category for an HVAC company?

It depends on which half of the year you most want calls from. The obvious choice is "HVAC contractor", and most competitors use it, which means you compete with every heating, cooling and duct company at once. The client we manage in Little Falls, New Jersey uses "Air conditioning repair service" as primary and "HVAC contractor" as secondary, and holds the map pack for both "ac repair" and "hvac" searches in its town. Check the three profiles currently in your map pack before deciding; the picker inside the profile is the source of truth for category names.

Do we need to show 24-hour opening hours?

If you answer the phone at 6am, yes, and it is one of the highest-value fields on an HVAC profile. Cooling failures are discovered at night and at dawn, and Google marks a profile "Closed" when the hours say so. A closed profile still ranks, but the customer with a hot house calls the one that says open. If you do not run 24-hour service, set the real hours accurately and list emergency service as a service instead of overstating.

When should we start working on summer rankings?

April, for June. The map pack does not rebuild itself when the heat arrives; it shows the profiles Google already trusts for cooling searches. Reviews, photos and service listings gathered in spring are what decide who gets the calls in the first heat wave. The same logic runs in reverse for heating: the work that wins January is done in October.

Our profile ranks for "hvac" but not "ac repair". Why?

Because those are different searches with different results, and Google matches them against your categories and service list. A profile whose primary category is the broad one and whose services do not name air conditioning repair, ac installation or emergency cooling has nothing specific to match. Listing each service with its own description is usually what closes that gap.

How long before we see calls from the profile?

Category, hours and service fixes usually show in a few weeks. Moving into the map pack for a competitive suburb depends on reviews and citations and takes longer. Every month you get the calls, direction requests and website clicks Google recorded, alongside the position of each target search.

Do you have HVAC clients?

Yes. We manage Air Temp Service Co in Little Falls, New Jersey, a 4.7-star profile with more than 200 Google reviews; the map-pack screenshot on this page is theirs. Their position moves with the season, so that screenshot records one search on one day rather than a standing claim.
